Housing crisis -- rent as extraction, shelter as commodity.

THE LEASE

APRIL 5, 2026

THE LEASE
You signed a lease for a place that costs more than your parents' mortgage. Seven hundred square feet. No yard. No garage. A kitchen so small you open the oven door into the hallway. And you call this independence. The landlord does not reside here. The landlord has not entered this building in years. The landlord's name is on a document you signed with a hand that was shaking because the alternative was your car. They will tell you housing is a market. They will tell you the market decides. As if The Myth of Ownership were a natural phenomenon. As if supply and demand were weather. But weather does not evict. Weather does not calculate your credit score. Weather does not raise the price because it noticed you had nowhere else to go. The floor is not something the landlord Owns. The floor is not something you Own. The floor is here. Your feet are on it. That is not Ownership. That is contact.
